Geese wintering in the Central Valley
California before the goldrush was a major flyway for Canadian geese and Sandhill cranes with several millions foraging in the wetlands during the fall and winter months. Their large flocks filled the sky and their honks echoed throughout the day.
These geese are bedding down for the night at Merced National Wildlife Refuge.
