Revive the San Joaquin Update

Dear Revive the San Joaquin Members,

Many of you have heard that a settlement was recently reached to restore the San Joaquin River. Restoration includes the return of the historic salmon runs destroyed by diversions at Friant Dam in the 1940’s. Promise of the return of a living San Joaquin River in our Valley’s future is magnificent news to all who have worked on this vital project. Details of the settlement agreement are not yet available and many channel restoration details remain to be worked out with landowners and stakeholders along the river.

With a settlement agreement in place, one might ask if there is a future purpose for Revive the San Joaquin. Many of us believe there will be as much need for RSJ in the future as before the settlement. Many issues will need advocates, such as public access, what agency will do the restoration, what restoration will look like, how restoration will be done, who will monitor the health of the returning fishery and much more. Now that farmers, businesses, water user of all types and environmentalists have reached a settlement, common sense must prevail to give the taxpayer the best value for his/her restoration dollar. Certainly, the multibillion-dollar economy created by San Joaquin River water can afford a restoration project that fulfills the settlement agreement’s definition of a restored river and thriving fishery.

With your help, we have made substantial progress. Our directors have written numerous letters to the editor that have been published in The Fresno Bee. RSJ filed a protest against an application to use SJR water for a new housing development near Friant. Lloyd Carter has given presentations to several organizations about San Joaquin River history and water law. Walt Shubin has guided numerous people from the media and other groups on tours of normally dry sections of the river west of Fresno to Highway 152 near Los Banos. During high water releases from Friant Dam this year, Sean Walker and Walt Shubin led a canoe trip from Gravelly Ford to Mendota. Walt Shubin, Sean Walker, Steven Haze and Lloyd Carter manned a Revive the San Joaquin information table at the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert in July that generated a lot of interest and possible new members.

Thanks to a grant from the Rose Foundation, Revive the San Joaquin has acquired a laptop computer, projector and portable screen. After some program development, we will be equipped to use power point presentations. If your service club, church, or other organization would like a presentation on what we are about, several board members are available for speaking engagements. Just call 559-226-0733 to arrange a speaker.

Revive the San Joaquin needs volunteer help in several areas. If anyone would like to help with preparing mailings, writing newsletters, grant writing or has a skill they would like to offer Revive the San Joaquin, we would appreciate hearing from you.

Thank you for your interest and past contributions.
